Saragh Penfold - BRDT Secretary
Date: Friday 19 May
Saragh Penfold moved to Blairgowrie from Falkirk in January 2022 and quickly became involved in the local community, joining the BRDT Board later that year. She works in IT for Lloyds Banking Group and as secretary of the Board has particular responsibility for the Trust’s membership. A keen reader and writer, Saragh also enjoys campervanning and is looking forward to getting to know the Blairgowrie and Rattray area.
What is it that you love or enjoy most about living in Blairgowrie and Rattray?
I love the climate in Blairgowrie, it is much less drizzly than Falkirk. I also love having the amenities of the town within walking distance, and the greenness of the whole place, there are so many trees and hedges.
What’s your professional background?
I work in IT for Lloyds Banking Group.
What motivates you?
Curiosity; and a desire to make things work more effectively.
Who is your hero and why?
Jane Austen. She was so clear-eyed and worked very hard at her craft.
How did you first get involved with BRDT?
I saw a notice on a Blairgowrie Facebook page asking for volunteers.
What experience and qualities do you feel you bring to BRDT?
I am used to running IT projects so I can imagine what initiatives might work, what likely blockers are, and how much effort initiatives are likely to take.
What are your areas of interest and particular roles and responsibilities as a BRDT Trustee?
I am secretary of the Board which gives me particular responsibility for membership; but I'm also interested in making sure processes are clear and easy to use.
Are you involved in any other community groups and organisations in the area?
Not yet - I work full time - but I’m looking forward to getting more involved as I get to know the area.
What do you do for fun or in your spare time (if you have any!)?
We have just finished fixing up the house we bought when we moved here, so are enjoying not having to do that anymore. And otherwise I read, and write fiction. And we go away in our camper van when the weather allows.
What are your hopes and aspirations for Blairgowrie and Rattray as a town and as a community?
I think the area has the features - fresh air, green environment, active community - that will make it a pleasant and healthy place to live for generations. Without being fancy or expensive it could really provide everyone who lives here with a great quality of life (so long as it’s possible for people to also earn a living, of course). I hope the community can support children growing up now to stay here if they want to and also have a family life here.
