Roar-some! City of Dundee Lions support community-run public toilets in Blairgowrie and Rattray

Big-hearted members of the City of Dundee Lions presented the volunteers who run the public toilets in Blairgowrie and Rattray with a donation of £200 towards the ongoing running costs of the facilities.

The funding boost comes as those behind the community-run toilets in Perthshire’s largest town mark one month since Blairgowrie and Rattray Development Trust (BRDT) took over the vital service from Perth and Kinross Council (PKC), saving the toilets from closure.

Win Arscott from the City of Dundee Lions explained why they chose to support efforts to keep the toilets open.

She said: “The toilets are a vital service for the town, for both local residents and visitors alike. We were therefore keen to support BRDT and the volunteers in their efforts to keep them open".

“We held a raffle in Tesco in June and raised more than £400, half of which is being donated to the development trust for the public toilets with the rest going to other local charities, including the Blairgowrie and Rattray Braemar Association.

“Any money we raise in Blairgowrie and Rattray always goes to local charities and stays in the town.”

Chair of BRDT Linda Tait thanked the Lions for their generosity, commenting: “We are hugely grateful to the City of Dundee Lions for thinking of the Loo Crew and the community’s efforts to keep the public toilets in the town open.

“The response to an initial appeal for support to save the facilities from closure has been fantastic and we are delighted that thanks to our wonderful volunteers, our sponsors Castle Water, Graham Environmental Services, Stagecoach, Tay Valet, Norman Laing & Co, Sholach Trees and Adventure into Books, and other community groups such as the Lions, this vital amenity remains open.

“This project is a fantastic example of BRDT’s ongoing work to enhance the facilities in the town and make a positive difference to those who live, work and visit here. All of our core projects support the drive towards Blairgowrie and Rattray becoming a vibrant and self-sustaining town for the benefit of the wider community.”
